Tippett in doubt for round one

<br /> Tippett in doubt for round one<br />

ADELAIDE forward Kurt Tippett has cast aside the ‘moon-boot’ protecting his injured ankle, but remains in doubt for club’s season opener against Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium next weekend.

Tippett suffered minor ligament damage to his ankle in the opening minutes of the Crows’ loss to Carlton in round three of the NAB Challenge.

The 23-year-old made a brief appearance at training on Friday morning minus the boot, but was restricted to light handball drills and will need to complete a full week of training before being considered for selection.

The Crows,, who have a bye in round two, could take an extra-cautious approach to Tippett’s recovery and give his ankle another fortnight to heal, but assistant coach Scott Camporeale said the club was pushing for its star goalkicker to play against the Hawks.

“Kurt’s on track to train next week, so hopefully he’ll get through training and have a full week on the track,,” Camporeale said on Friday.

“Hopefully, inter football shirts, he’ll be available for round one. We’re certainly pushing forward for him to play round one.”

Former best-and-fairest winner Bernie Vince, defender Brodie Martin and forwards Ricky Henderson and Matthew Jaensch will play in the SANFL this weekend, with the aim of boosting their chances of playing in round one.

Ruckman Sam Jacobs (hamstring) and Jared Petrenko (abdominal strain) were also expected to get much needed practice in the local league this weekend, english football shirt, but failed to train with the team during the week and won’t be considered for selection against the Hawks.

Martin missed the Crows’ final-round NAB Challenge game with a knee injury and needs to put in a solid performance for Sturt to stay ahead of Richmond recruit Richard Tambling at selection.

In February, coach Neil Craig declared an underdone Tambling wasn’t in the club’s best 22 players, but the former first-round draft pick has rocketed into calculations for round one with two impressive performances in the last fortnight.

Camporeale said the club was yet to finalise its team to take on the Hawks and that Tambling was one of 29 players pushing for a spot.

“Richard’s certainly well in the mix. I think Neil’s comment [regarding Tambling not being in the best 22] early on was when Richard was a fair bit underdone and when he’d had a couple of issues post-operation before Christmas,” Camporeale said.

“He’s trained really well and he’s keeping up to speed with how we want to play. He’s getting really confident playing with the guys that he’s playing with.

“That’s going to take time, but he’s certainly put his hand up over the last two weeks.”

Richard Tambling is a $237,,300 midfielder in the Toyota AFL Dream Team competition.

Stephen Kernahan President’s Address

<br /> Stephen Kernahan: President’s Address<br />

Interim Carlton President, Stephen Kernahan, spoke about the progress of the young Carlton team in 2008 together with the continued growth of the club off the field prior to Friday nights match against St Kilda at the MCG. He also thanked Greig Pickhaver (H G Nelson) for making the time to travel down from Sydney to not only be at the game but to make himself available to speak with guests during the dinner. (H G Nelson was a special guest at the dinner and spoke about a number of issues from the 2008 AFL season,, in his own style of course. Once again he proved to be very funny and a very popular addition to the pre-match entertainment in the Presidents function).

Round 15 and importantly the season is still alive for Carlton – the first time since 2001. However it is not just about the season still being alive,, it is about the development and the improvement in the individuals and the team.

About facing the challenges each week.

Today we face St Kilda, football team t shirt, a team we have not enjoyed success over since round 20 in 2001, having lost 10 consecutive matches since that time.

Another challenge for this exciting young group recent history has given the 2008 team some terrible records to try and shatter and they have done so on a number of occasions

- Most consecutive losses in the Clubs history stopped in round four

- Keeping opposition to under 100 points also stopped in round four

- Lack of success interstate reversed in rounds seven and 11.

- In round nine we defeated Fremantle for the first time since round 16 in 2001,, after nine consecutive losses similar to the historic challenge we face today.

It is a challenge for the team and an important occasion with two players celebrating milestones.

Heath Scotland plays his 100th game for Carlton in his 153rd AFL game

Joined Carlton from Collingwood after the 2003 season and has played 100 of a possible 103 games since joining Carlton.

Marc Murphy plays his 50th AFL game

Number one selection in the 2005 National Draft he has shown why he was the number one selection and we are looking forward to many more games from Marc in the Navy Blue Guernsey. It is a wonderful milestone as he joins his Grandfather and his father to play 50 AFL matches.

The excitement that has been generated on the field in 2008 is displayed off the field in a number of areas:

A record membership of 40,764 and we thank everyone who has joined as a member this year. It is important that we continue to grow our membership as the Carlton Football Club is about people.

The corporate support continues to grow as well. This is shown tonight with over 570 guests here in the Presidents dinner and all available facilities for Carlton for tonights game are sold out.

Adding to this excitement is the progress of the development of the elite training facilities at Princes Park.

- The Social Club and Heatley Stand have been closed and fences have been erected around these areas

- Reception has been relocated to near Gate 1 at the ground

- Preliminary engineering and site inspection works have commenced

- Tenders are due to be received later this month and all being well the redevelopment will officially be underway next month

The future is exciting on and off the field it would be a bonus tonight to have our exciting young team overcome another challenge with a victory over St Kilda.

Saints launch new membership campaign

<br /> Saints launch new membership campaign<br />

St Kilda stars Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball and Lenny Hayes have appeared in a new ad campaign aimed at boosting the Clubs membership numbers ahead of season 2009.

The trio had their bodies inked in St Kilda themed tribal paint to evoke their passion, pride and loyalty for the Club. The eye-catching shots appeared on the front cover of The Age sport on Saturday and a behind the scenes video is viewable at www.saintscentral.com.au. Riewoldt also spoke of the experience while in the Channel 10 commentary on Saturday evening.

The St Kilda skipper emphasised the importance of all supporters getting behind the Club in 2009 by purchasing a membership.

“Members are the life blood of this football Club,” Riewoldt said.

“Their passion and support is one of the key things that drives this playing group. We cant play week in,mls football kits, week out without the loyalty of our members and that was why Lenny, Bally and myself did the recent campaign,, we really wanted to show what the Club meant to us.

“Now its up to all of our supporters, fans and members who have not yet committed to us in 2009 to get behind the Club. The Saints gain our strength through loyalty, as depicted in our Club crest, and we really hope to hit our target in 2009.”

The Saints are rapidly approaching 22,000 members and are aiming for a total of 30,000.

In what was a passionate link to the Saints, the recent tribal photo shoot was completed using time and resources donated by Plutonium Communications, a division of Club sponsor DPA.

Executive Director,, Kirk Peterson said, arsenal goalkeepers shirt, “Plutonium are great supporters of the St Kilda Football Club and we absolutely loved the concept of the tattoo campaign.

“The team here at Plutonium donated our time and resources to produce this campaign for the Saints which we believe further emphasises the underlying Strength Through Loyalty theme. We are immensely proud to be working alongside such a strong and committed football Club.”

Joseph Meseha of Plutonium said, “The final images are so powerful and evoke a sense of passion and belonging to the red,, white and black. Hopefully fans see these shots and have the desire to be part of what will no doubt be an exciting 2009 for the Club.”

Shoulder could end Hunter’s career

<br /> Shoulder could end Hunter’s career<br />

WEST COAST’S Adam Hunter faces a premature end to his AFL career with coach John Worsfold suggesting the premiership hero’s shoulder was beyond repair.

Hunter had his shoulder reconstructed more than 12 months ago and has continued to seek specialist help this season, but Worsfold said the 28-year-old was playing in pain and the next step would be a full shoulder replacement.

Worsfold said the key position player’s future hinged on a post-season medical assessment, but it was unlikely his shoulder would allow him to continue at AFL level.

“I don’t know what Adam’s thinking about his football career, but it’s unlikely that he’d be capable of playing AFL football, tottenham hotspur jacket,” Worsfold said from Subiaco Oval on Tuesday.

“I don’t think he can fix his shoulder.

“Obviously you can explore further things, women s celtics shirts, but the bit I know is that the next major surgery for Adam will basically be a new shoulder, which they don’t like to do with people of that age.

“His shoulder is in pretty bad shape.”

Worsfold said the ongoing aid of painkillers was not in Hunter’s long-term interests and he would have to prove he was able to play without them to prolong his 10-year career.

“To play AFL footy he’d have to say, ‘My shoulder’s better and capable of playing at that level’,,” Worsfold said.

“That’s a medical issue, so it’s more about what the doctors are going to recommend, which will influence Adam’s decision about whether he thinks he can continue playing footy or not.

“He’s been an outstanding player for us [and] it’s been tough not having him out there this year. Even the games he played this year,, he still played very well for us.

“It’d be sad not to have him part of it. But we all move on for various reasons.”

Hunter has played 151 games for West Coast and earned life membership of the club earlier this season.

He has been limited to 19 matches in the last two years,, with the most recent of those the loss to Geelong at Subiaco Oval in round 11.

Hunter joined West Coast as the 29th selection in the 2000 national draft.

Ablett admits he was short a gallop

<br /> Ablett admits he was short a gallop<br />

AFTER missing the entire pre-season,manchester united shirt history, Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett admitted he struggled with the pace of Saturday nights loss to Carlton.

Ablett had a groin injury that prevented him from playing any part in the pre-season and the rust showed against the Blues.

Relentlessly followed by running machine Andrew Carrazzo,, the Brownlow medallist struggled to get into the contest.

He had just three possessions at quarter time, eight at the half and eventually finished with 23.

“It was hard at the start of the game, I wasnt quite up to the pace at the start,” Ablett said.

“But it was good to get out there and have a run around and get out there with the boys and help out as much as I can, but it showed tonight weve still got a bit to learn.”

Ablett said while he was disappointed with the 119-point loss, sunderland shirts, he enjoyed his first stint as captain.

“I was fine with it. I got out there and said a few things to the boys before the game. But as Ive said before, youre not going to be a successful side unless youve got 22 leaders out there,, so were really working hard to help these young guys mature into leaders.”

Ablett was philosophical about the first up drubbing and said most of the team was “pretty positive” directly after the match.

He said he was more excited than nervous before it started.

“The boys seemed pretty relaxed before game. We had so many guys playing their first game and theyre going to get a lot out of that,,” he said.

“Well review the tape and see what areas we have to fix up and theres plenty of them. The more games we get in these guys, the better.

“It was disappointing to lose by as much as we did but well move on quickly, look to next week, fix up the areas we need to.”

We need to be more disciplined Morton

<br /> We need to be more disciplined: Morton<br />

MELBOURNE youngster Cale Morton says his side might need to reassess the way it approaches both the ball and its opposition after free kicks played a part in his teams demise to Carlton on Sarurday.

The Demons lost by 41 points, 15.11 (101) to 9.6 (60),, but they did get within 19 points in the third quarter.

That was after trailing by as much as 45 earlier in the term as the Blues capatalised on a flying start courtesy of the opening five goals of the match.

Carltons Setanta OhAilpin opened his sides scoring account before the ball had been bounced when Demons defender Matthew Warnock infringed in a bit of push and shove.

While OhAilpins set shot drifted left,, it set about a chain that led to the Blues booting 5.1 before Brad Green would open Melbournes account.

Morton admitted his side was sluggish at the start.

“[Its] probably more of a mental thing,” the 20-year-old said.

“[Its about] just being switched on right from the first bounce … today I think we gave away a free kick before the first bounce and then we gave away far too many free kicks around the ground.

“That probably resulted in goals, so thats something weve got to watch now.”

Morton said his side was no more fired up “than any other week” but knew it had a chance to push a claim for a spot in the eight, perhaps leading to some players being overzealous at the contest.

“I think today we thought we had a real good chance at having a crack at a good side and we were pretty confident heading into the match,” he said.

“Some things are out of our hands, like umpiring decisions, but weve just got to change the way we attack the footy and how we attack our opposition.”

To their credit, the Dees did respond in the third term. When the rain started to bucket down, Melbournes intensity seemed to lift.

“When it rains it is more simple,, its all about getting the ball forward and surging the ball forward … and giving our forwards a chance one on one with their defenders, tottenham hotspur match,” Morton said.

“But when the opposition have got more of the ball than you thats hard to do and also when youre not winning the ball, but certainly [giving away] free kicks doesnt help that.”

Morton, the No.4 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft, online futbol barcelona, played a big role in the third-quarter revival.

Playing just his third game back from a knee injury, he had 13 disposals during the third term as Melbourne booted five goals to two.

He finished with 23 touches including five rebound 50s and two inside 50s to show the youngster drafted as a midfielder is getting used to playing a defensive role.

The Other Half

<br /> The Other Half<br />

A Mile.. Okay not quite a Mile.. Around The Block In His Shoes..

In the name of beauty, fashion and a deep seated love of looking good, women wear heels. We were at a wedding last weekend (not just any wedding, Jarrad McVeigh wedded his gorgeous partner Clementine in an exquisite ceremony fit for royalty) and while it was a beautiful day, it took us gals the rest of the week to get over the shoes we wore. My toe,kit soccer, fourth on the right, is still numb! But it wasnt just the girls, there was Goodesy too (on Groomsman duties) whose feet were bound like a Japanese Geishas to fit in to a brand new pair of shiny, chelsea football schedule 2011, black, patent leather wheels. Beauty is pain.

After telling me I looked beautiful (bless),, Brett made comment on how he couldnt understand how I walked in those things. And as I shuffled ten centimetres at a time, leg slightly bent (think Whoopi Goldberg from Ghost) I thought about the one staple vessel in his shoe diet.. football boots!

You know the ones, theyre leather, come in a fantastic range of colours (I have been told by a source that white shoes make you look like youre running faster),, sporting logos galore,, they house all those studs on the sole and the players run around in them for up to two and a half hours per game.

Surely footy boots couldnt be too comfortable!? My husbands feet are living proof of what footy boots can do to ones feet (think Lord of The Rings meets Walking with Dinosaurs). Although.. this could have a lot to do with him wearing his boots a size too small for nearly twenty years because an old codger who owned the sports store told him he would play better and then this football-boot-wearing-code became gospel.

So I decided to take some of Bretts footy boots out for a test run to see for myself.

I ran around the block and while I was running on cement and the boots were too big, I was able to confirm that footy boots can officially claim the uncomfortable tag along with the beloved stiletto!

PS whilst discussing this blog with Brett we concluded that both football boots and high heels were designed by podiatrists! However this is only a passing opinion, by no means is it fact..

Sumich still has senior coaching ambitions

<br /> Sumich still has senior coaching ambitions<br />

RESPECTED West Coast assistant Peter Sumich says he still has senior coaching ambitions but is going to take a low-key approach to the Richmond vacancy.

John Worsfold’s right-hand man unsuccessfully interviewed for the Melbourne and Essendon coaching positions in 2007 and was also considered a prime candidate to lead Fremantle prior to Mark Harvey’s appointment.

Sumich, 40,, is in his eighth season as an assistant at West Coast but his name has not been raised prominently in betting markets for the Richmond position or major newspaper lists.

Sumich said he would prefer to take a low-key approach to the latest vacancy but said he still aspired to be a senior coach.

“There’s no doubt I do,, I wouldn’t be in the caper [otherwise],,” Sumich said from Subiaco Oval on Friday.

“Where it ends up at the end of the year with Richmond and what they want to do,shirts sale, that’s up to them.

“That’s out of my control. I just play it low-key.

“When it all comes out later on in the year we’ll see what happens.”

Nearly all of the leading candidates for the Richmond job have served an apprenticeship as an assistant coach, while former Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley is yet to do so.

Sumich said having inexperienced coaches considered ahead of him was something he took in his stride.

“That’s the nature of the game, football shirts with names,” he said. “But I understand it’s a tough gig, just getting an interview or whatever over in Melbourne.”

Sumich oversaw West Coast’s revered midfield in the club’s 2006 premiership and has this year taken over as forward line coach.

He is the club’s all-time leading goalkicker and a dual premiership player.

Sumich also coached South Fremantle in the WAFL for two seasons before taking up his current position with West Coast in 2002.
